Can ChatGPT convert bank statements to Excel?
Yes, for some PDFs, with caveats. OpenAI says ChatGPT can analyze uploaded PDFs, create tables and produce downloadable spreadsheets. It also says ChatGPT may not reliably extract exact values from scanned files or complex layouts, and that you should review its outputs before relying on them. For a bank statement, check every row and the closing balance against the PDF whichever tool you use. Disclosure: Fulla Ledger, which publishes this guide, makes one of the tools compared here. What happens when you upload a statement to ChatGPT
OpenAI Academy describes the steps: open the tools menu, select Add photos or files, and ask a question or give a task. Its examples include extracting information from a PDF into a simple table, and it says you can download outputs such as updated spreadsheets.
OpenAI’s help article on data analysis lists PDFs among the supported file types and says ChatGPT can create tables for row-by-row review. For some tasks it writes and runs Python code, and OpenAI asks you to review the generated code, outputs and assumptions before relying on the result. Available file types can vary by model, plan, workspace settings and account.
What OpenAI says to watch for
The same help article names the limits that matter for bank statements.
- Scanned files: ChatGPT may not reliably extract exact values from image-based tables, scanned files or files with complex visual layouts. When exact values matter, OpenAI suggests uploading a spreadsheet or text-based file instead.
- Incomplete results: a file may upload successfully but still be too large, complex or image-heavy for complete analysis. OpenAI suggests asking ChatGPT to inspect specific sections or splitting the file.
- Method choices: ChatGPT may choose a method that does not match your intent on the first try, so tell it exactly which columns you want.
Privacy questions to ask before uploading financial documents
A bank statement shows account details, balances and who you pay. Before you upload one to any tool, AI or not, get answers to these questions from that tool’s own documentation.
- How long is the file kept, and can I delete it? OpenAI points to its article on chat and file retention.
- Can my content be used to improve models, and how do I turn that off? OpenAI points to its data controls articles.
- Which other services receive the pages?
- Who at the provider can see the document, and when?
- Does my employer or client allow statements to be uploaded to this tool?
Other ways to get a PDF statement into Excel
Excel’s Get Data from PDF uses the Power Query PDF connector. Microsoft’s documentation lists Excel among the products, says the connector returns the tables it finds in a PDF, and combines similar tables on consecutive pages by default. It notes that multi-line rows may not be identified properly and may need cleaning up afterwards, which is common in statements where a description wraps onto a second line.
Adobe Acrobat has a free online PDF to Excel converter. Adobe says it transfers PDF tables into Excel rows and columns, and that a password-protected PDF must first be unlocked with its password before conversion.
A dedicated bank statement converter is built for statements rather than general tables. Fulla Ledger accepts text, scanned, mixed and password-protected PDFs, up to 50 MiB and 250 pages each. You select a row to see the statement page and the highlighted area it came from, correct or split rows, check balances, and approve before export. Exports are XLSX, CSV and OFX. Fulla does not promise perfect extraction, and you can convert one page free without an account once every 24 hours.
Scanned and password-protected statements
Scanned pages are the hardest case for every method. OpenAI says ChatGPT may not reliably read exact values from scans, and Microsoft’s PDF connector page does not state support for scanned PDFs. Check the smallest amounts, minus signs and decimal points on the scan before you trust any output.
For password-protected statements, Adobe asks you to unlock the PDF first. Fulla asks for the password through a document password prompt, so the file does not need to be unlocked beforehand. The guide to preparing scanned and password-protected statements covers both cases in detail.
How to check the spreadsheet afterwards
Whichever tool produced the spreadsheet, run these checks before you use it.
- Count the transactions on each PDF page and compare with the rows for that page.
- Check that opening balance plus the sum of signed amounts equals the printed closing balance.
- Look for reversed signs: money out should be negative if you use one amount column.
- Check dates near page breaks and descriptions that wrap over two lines.
- Confirm the date format: 03/04 can mean 3 April or 4 March.

Questions about this guide
Can ChatGPT convert bank statements to Excel?
Often, for clear text-based PDFs. OpenAI says ChatGPT can analyze uploaded PDFs, create tables and produce downloadable spreadsheets, but it may not reliably extract exact values from scanned files or complex layouts. Check every row and the closing balance against the statement.
Can AI convert a PDF bank statement to Excel?
Yes. General assistants such as ChatGPT and dedicated converters both use AI to read statement pages. The difference is how you check the result: a dedicated converter such as Fulla Ledger links each row to its source page so you can review it before export.
Is it safe to upload bank statements to ChatGPT?
That depends on your account settings and on what your employer or clients allow. Read OpenAI’s articles on file retention and data controls before uploading. The same questions apply to any converter.
Can Excel convert a PDF bank statement by itself?
Excel can import tables from a PDF through Get Data and the Power Query PDF connector. Microsoft notes that multi-line rows may need cleaning up afterwards.
Does Fulla Ledger use ChatGPT?
No. Fulla sends rendered pages only to the AI extraction service named in its privacy notice: Mistral, through OpenRouter with zero data retention.
